It is 2154 on the planet Pandora. A terrestrial mining company with an establishment on Pandora led by Parker Selfridge for the mining of a precious mineral. For the space journey to and from earth fast spaceships are used that overpass four light years in six years. During the journey persons are transported in frozen state, so when they wake up it just looks like a short trip. Indigenous population of humanoid creatures live on Pandora , they are called the Na’vi. They are as intelligent as humans, but technologically less advanced. They walk on two legs like humans, are 3 meter long, slender, supple, with a tail and one with a zebra-skin pattern of light and dark. People have developed a technique to essentially create a genetic intermediate form between man and Na’vi , these are known as avatars. The person uses a wireless devices connected to his mental avatar so he can control, and can see, feel, etc. through the avatar, while his body is asleep. when the avatar sleeps teh driver can be disconnected so he can eat and report to his senior. Through the avatars people can easily contact the Na’vi, besides the avatar does not have to wear an oxygen mask like humans do on Pandora.
The former Marine Jake Sully gets the unexpected opportunity to be sent out to Pandora, because the previous avatar of his deceased twin brother can still be used, because they have the same DNA. Sullys legs are paralyzed but when he connects to his wonderful avatar he can walk again. His avatar will be used as guardian for the researchers. He becomes separated from the others and attacked by animals. Neytiri of Na’vi tribe wants to kill him first, but she gets a sign from the goddess of the Na’vi, Eywa, which is favorable for Jake. She saves him from the animals and gives him command of learning everything about their lives. Thus for example, he gradually becomes adept at riding an IKRA, a flying animal. Jake and Neytiri will eventually fall in love.
While Jake gains confidence with the tribe and quickly falls in love with the pretty Neytiri, his Colonel moves forward with his extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand – and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.
